Ten Ways to Spruce up Your School Uniform

Senior Emily Smith

It’s safe to say that outside of school, Nerinx girls have some serious style. Whether at Loufest, a SLUH Mixer, or Theatre Day, one can be sure a Nerinx girl will be wearing only the trendiest of threads. During the school day, however, everyone is wearing the same plaid uniform skirt. As a result, making a uniform unique is a common expression of one’s individuality here at the Hall. Students don’t always adhere to the rules when they do this, though. So, here are ten simple ways to spruce up your school skirt while still being in uniform.

  • Pins: Brooches aren’t just for your grandma to wear anymore! Empowered ladies such as Madeleine Albright, first female secretary of state, use pins to make statements and express their moods. These babies will look great on a sweater, polo collar, or turtleneck.
  • Hair Accessories: Ditch the ponytail every once and awhile and try some hair accessories! Jaw clips, bun slides, hair rings, and headbands can easily bring life to your uniform. Scrunchies are back in too, and they look cute on your wrist!
  • Chunky Socks: This is a big one. While Nerinx does not allow you to wear funky socks (no matter how cute your avocado print ones are…), there are still ways around this. Chunky socks are trendy right now, and if you are good at knitting (knitting club, I’m looking at you), you can make your own!
  • Jewelry: There are no limits to the jewelry a Nerinx girl can wear during the school day. Chokers look nice when paired with a polo, and hoop earrings go well with a turtleneck.
  • Sweaters: Solid colored sweaters that are in Nerinx uniform colors look great over a polo. You can also wear them around your shoulders or waist.
  • Tights: Few students actually take advantage of being able to wear tights. As long as they are one of the uniform colors (black, white, navy, forest green, or yellow), tights are allowed to be worn under a skirt. My personal favorite is yellow, because it’s the least prominent color in the skirt!
  • Makeup: Technically, there are no limits to the makeup students can wear during the school day. Try a new lipstick or a pop of color to enhance the eyes, like blue mascara.
  • Shoes: According to the Student Handbook, “leather ‘school shoes’ such as loafers, topsiders, or athletic shoes may be worn with the skirt, shorts, and pants. Sandals, flip-flops, boots of any kind, soft soled moccasins, crocs, Birkenstocks, and fur trimmed footwear are not acceptable for school.” A popular choice has been the iconic “Adidas Sneaker.” Rather than buying the same “Adidas Originals” that other people have, try the option pictured below on Senior Caroline Burton.
  • Ties: Senior Class Representative Cassidy Rieke recommends students wear a tie. This is especially appealing to any Gossip Girl or Harry Potter fans.
  • YOGA PANTS: If you don’t know, now you know. As of this year, Nerinx Students are allowed to wear yoga pants under their skirts. While this isn’t always the most fashionable look, it is certainly most comfortable (which is what’s really important). If you’d rather save your money for cafeteria cookies than splurge on Lululemon pants, check your local Target or Old Navy!
